As a result of the large number of migrant workers who pass through, stay or return to Tijuana, the ILO together with SUCOMM (Sindicatos Unidos con México Moderno) and the union of which they are part, the CROC (Confederación Revolucionaria de Obreros y Campesinos) opened the Resource Center for Migrant Workers (CRTM). It is the only Center in Mexico that seeks to bring labour justice for migrant workers.
The Center began operating in March 2022 and currently provides a series of services that have directly benefited more than 350 people, such as information on human and labor rights for migrants; support in conciliation and labor trials; accompaniment in cases of trafficking, forced labor and labour exploitation, abuse during recruitment; advice for labor formalization; among others. In cases where users require other services, such as health and education, the CRTM refers them to organizations with which it has established an excellent relationship, both governmental and civil society.
In these few months of operation, the Center has shown to be a viable option, both to respond to the needs of the migrant worker population, above all, to give a very active role to trade union organizations and to get involved in the search for solutions that guarantee decent employment and access to social protection for them.
Last week, the ILO team visited the Center to systematize its work, meet with local institutions and civil society organizations with which the CRTM coordinates, and discuss future support to strengthen its work and possible options for replication in other states of the republic.
